Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Key Medium donated a new website, brand identity, advertising budget, and expertise through the Coding for Causes program to help improve outreach, SEO, web design, and to generate unique traffic for Grounded in Philly’s website. Key Medium’s web design on the Grounded in Philly project has won five awards in the Community Websites category, along with the Environmental Awareness and Pro Bono category earning the highest possible honors in a few of the internationally-acclaimed creative competitions, such as the 2019 Hermes Creative Awards with a Platinum, and the 2019 dotComm Awards with a Gold, judged by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals. It’s also won honors from the 2019 Muse Creative Awards, the 2019 Communicator Awards, the 2019 W3 Awards, and the 2020 AVA Digital Awards.

“The website has been a great success. It’s work that we are proud of. People in the community are using the website to chat in the new online forum called, The Grapevine, and it’s bringing a sense of connectedness and community that is sometimes lacking in the modern world,” says Ali Jaffar, CEO and lead developer for Key Medium.

Grounded in Philly was founded in 2013 alongside the Garden Justice Legal initiative with a goal to match the city’s vacant land with members in the community, providing resources, tools, and information to create urban gardens and farms. The initiative has helped to ease food insecurity in the community.

Key Medium donated a new brand identity, advertising spend, a website development budget, a web hosting budget, and expertise to improve the site overall. Within just six months, Key Medium had helped the platform increase organic traffic by 28% organic search results by 13%, and increase users by 31%, all with a new design. Social media traffic also grew by 260%.

Ali continues, “our website work focuses on helping over 300,000 Philadelphians who face food insecurity every day and over 175,000 people who didn’t have routine access to green space. At Key Medium, we look to support causes we believe in, to help make our community a better place for everyone. The University of Pennsylvania has studied that these green spaces lower rates of depression and are a source of fresh, local produce in neighborhoods facing disinvestment and food insecurity. We are thankful to continue to be part of a solution.”

Grounded in Philly hosted a launch party in April to celebrate the launch of the site at One Art Community Center. The initiative has allowed the community to identify landowners and connect with city council members to gain access to over 140 vacant lots for community use.
